Call for Proposals: EUI's €90 Million Initiative Driving Urban Energy and Technological Transformation

Innovators, get ready! The European Urban Initiative (EUI) has launched its third Call for Proposals, to contribute toward sustainable urban development across Europe. With a substantial budget of €90 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), this initiative aims to fund innovative projects that focus on energy transition and technological advancements in cities.

The call is open until 14 October 2024 (by 14:00 CEST), and each project can receive up to a maximum of €5 million ERDF co-financing and project implementation. Projects should take place within a maximum period of 3,5 years.

Let's unpack the call for proposals in more detail:

Strategic Focus: Energy and Technology

The initiative targets two critical areas: 'Energy Transition' and 'Technology in Cities.' These themes aim to support renewable energy and innovative technologies in urban settings, enhancing their sustainability and resilience. The funded projects are expected to serve as scalable models that can be replicated in other urban areas, which will broaden the impact of successful innovations.

Application Process: How to Engage

Cities interested in participating are invited to start developing a project concept that addresses specific local challenges. The steps to apply include:

  1. Understanding the Topics: Applicants should begin by reading through detailed descriptions of the call topics available on the EUI's website.

  2. Project Partnership: Forming a project partnership is crucial. This involves reaching out to potential partners such as public and private entities, NGOs, universities, and SMEs.

  3. Project Design: Collaboratively design a project plan with all stakeholders, ensuring that the project aligns with one of the designated topics and addresses real urban challenges.

  4. Submission: Complete and submit the application by the deadline. You can use the EUI's online platforms and guidelines to ensure compliance with submission requirements.

Empowering Urban Innovators: Support and Resources

The call for proposals might seem daunting at first glance, but not to fear! The EUI provides extensive support to applicants through multiple channels:

  • Guidance Documents: Comprehensive guides detail the framework, rules, and procedures for project development, application, and implementation.

  • Webinars and Workshops: The EUI hosts webinars and workshops, including focused sessions and practical application form workshops. These sessions are helpful to see how successful project designs and application strategies can be achieved.

  • One-to-One Consultations: Applicants can also register for personal consultations with the EUI Permanent Secretariat during the applicant seminars, which will supply tailored advice and feedback.
