Empowering Futures: EU's €23 Million Investment to Transform Long-Term Unemployment in European Cities

In a bold move to address the challenge of long-term unemployment, the European Commission has pledged a staggering €23 million. This substantial investment forms a pivotal part of the EU's sweeping action plan to tackle labour shortages and skills gaps. With a keen focus on innovation, the initiative aims to leverage the power of social economy organisations to pioneer fresh strategies in the fight against unemployment.

Addressing a Lingering Challenge

Despite record-high employment rates in the EU, long-term unemployment persists as a significant concern across many Member States. In 2022 alone, approximately 4.5 million people over the age of 25 were classified as long-term unemployed. The prolonged absence from the workforce increases the risk of poverty and social exclusion, showing the need for targeted interventions tailored to individual needs.

Empowering Individuals, Transforming Communities

Recent EU-funded research has shown the efficacy of innovative strategies, such as "job guarantees," in facilitating the reintegration of long-term unemployed people into the workforce. These initiatives prioritise job creation tailored to local community needs, offering a dual benefit of addressing labour shortages while providing meaningful employment opportunities.

Initiatives like Berlin in Germany's Solidary Basic Income are empowering long-term unemployed people by offering tangible pathways to economic independence and professional growth. By providing job opportunities and personalised support, these programs empower participants to rebuild their confidence and skill sets, setting the stage for future employment success. Beyond individual benefits, these initiatives contribute to the broader social and economic vitality of communities.

With vital EU support facilitating cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange, innovative initiatives are set to make a significant impact in the fight against unemployment.

The Need-to-Know & Important Dates

Organisations have until 30 September this year to submit funding proposals, with projects spanning up to 36 months. Offering grants ranging from €1-3 million per project. An upcoming online session on 28 May will provide additional insights and networking opportunities to strengthen collaborative efforts in addressing this persistent challenge. More information about this project will be made available on this page.

The Impact of Innovative Solutions for Long-Term Unemployment on European Cities

Innovative solutions aimed at combating long-term unemployment hold immense promise for the future of European cities. By addressing the root causes of unemployment and empowering individuals to re-enter the workforce, these initiatives have the potential to create transformative change at an urban level.

As cities across Europe strive to build resilient and inclusive communities, the successful implementation of these projects could lead to a host of positive outcomes. From reduced poverty and social exclusion to enhanced economic productivity and community cohesion, the ripple effects of empowering individuals through gainful employment extend far beyond individual success stories. By fostering a skilled and engaged workforce, these initiatives lay the groundwork for thriving urban centres that embrace diversity, promote social mobility, and foster sustainable growth.
